Patch, gel or tablet: what forms of hormone treatment are there?

Overview of the different forms of hormone treatment for menopause.

Hormone treatment for menopause usually involves two hormones:

  • Estradiol (oestrogen): reduces symptoms such as hot flashes and poor sleep.

  • Progesterone: protects the lining of your uterus and can have a positive effect on your sleep. If you no longer have a uterus, progesterone is often not needed.

What forms are available?

Estradiol is available as a tablet, gel or patch. There's no price difference between the forms. Your preference matters, but the doctor determines what's medically best suited to you.

Do I take progesterone continuously or for 14 days a month?

This depends on your situation, for example whether you still have periods or have a coil. Your doctor will indicate in your treatment plan which schedule applies to you.
